Excellent value for the cost, November 27, 2016

I did quite a bit of research before deciding to purchase this phone. The features I wanted the most was a large screen (at least 5.7 inch); a large battery; good screen resolution; RAM of at least 2GB; ROM of at least 16GB; good wifi performance; and the latest Android operating system at a cost of less than $200. This phone meets all my requirements and is competitively priced. The phone comes with a AC power brick, micro USB cable, earbuds that contain a microphone in line with the wiring for hands-free phone use, screen protector, a soft plastic cover you can attach to protect the back and the sides of the phone, and a quick guide instruction manual.

I’ve only had the phone a few days but I like it overall and consider it to be an excellent value for the price (I paid $140). I’m using it with H2O wireless service which uses AT&T’s network. No problem making and receiving calls so far and I get the 4G icon when data is turned on. This is a huge improvement for me personally because my old phone (a Huawei Ascend Mate) would only connect at 3G. Even though the Mate had 4G/LTE frequency bands, it did not have the bands that the US GSM carriers use. Do your homework before purchasing any unlocked “International Version” phone to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Here are the pros and cons I have for this phone:

    – Has 4,900 mAh battery (will last most people all day)
    – Dual SIM slots
    – Micro SD card slot (up to 64GB)
    – Android 6.0 OS (many competitors in the sub $200 range still use 4.x or 5.X)
    – 1280×720 resolution looks very good for pictures and videos
    – Good wifi antenna and performance
    – LED flash for front and rear cameras
    – Good performance speed (considering the CPU clock speed is only 1.3GHz)

    – Back cover needs to be taken off to insert/access SIM and SD cards. Of course, there are no tools or instructions that tell you how to do this properly or safely. I’m used to having Micro SD card access along the edge where I would peel back the cover; eject the card; and then insert it into my PC to add files to it and then put it back in the phone. To avoid repeated cover removal and installation I’ve resorted to using a wireless file transfer app to get new files from my PC to my phone (and vice versa). If you want to insert different SD cards on the fly, it will not support that type of convenience.
    – No User/Owner’s Manual available that I could find. There is a “BLU Help” icon/app on the home screen but it does not contain any help or troubleshooting files at all. It only enables you to register your phone online for the 1-year limited warranty. You can probably initiate technical assistance through it after registering but I was looking for reference type information I could potentially use right away.
    – No phone-specific after-market accessories currently available. This con will eventually go away but since this phone is a new release (released Nov 2016) there are no screen protectors or cases available right now that I could find.

It’s too early to tell how well this phone will hold up but I like it so far. Despite the above cons, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars based on the specs, performance and cost. It was bumpy getting started and learning the Android 6.0 OS but thanks to the Internet, I was able to find the info I needed and have everything setup like I want it now. I think this phone is a good choice for someone who wants a phone with a large screen; big battery; good overall performance; and who doesn’t want to spend several hundred dollars on a phone.

12/6/2016 Update – Screen protectors are now available but the main thing I wanted to point out is that many people “appear” to be buying the BLU Studio XL D850Q case for this phone as Amazon is indicating that the two are “frequently bought together”. This is not the right case for this XL 2 phone. Although the XL 2 and D850Q are very close in size, (you can make the XL 2 fit in the D850Q case), the XL 2 has its USB port on the top left whereas the D850Q has its USB port on the bottom center. I guess one could cut the top left corner off to access the USB port without taking the phone out of the cover to charge it, but the XL 2 back camera and speaker seem to be closer to the edge than on the D850Q.

First Impressions Are Great! Phone App has some problems though, December 22, 2016

Ordered the phone on Dec 19th, and just received it today (12/22/16). To start off with, I have a Samsung Edge s7 that is in Texas for repairs so I need something to have for about 2 weeks. I needed a phone that would handle my Etsy accounts since that is what I do for a living. I have three shops on there and with the busy Xmas season still going on, I needed a phone that can update me FAST and reliably with emails, notifications, texts and everything else in-between. My previous little Alcatel GoPhone for $40 was NOT cutting it (it has a 1790 Mah battery so you do the math 🙂 so I thought I would opt for something a little better.

Ive only had the phone for a short while and here is what I can say regarding pros and cons during my first impressions:

-Screen is very big and pretty. Even though the pixel density is not amazing, I honestly cant tell too much!
-I thought the screen would be sticky and squishy and I was surprised to say that it is NOT like that at all. For a 6″ inch display, its pretty nice and very responsive.
    – You dont need to touch the screen hard for it to work. Its very sensitive
    – Notification light is blue and super bright. I really like it.
    – Feel of the phone is very nice. Its actually pretty weighty for a massive phone and does feel premium. I have no complaints on the build quality at all besides the back casing (see CONS). Feels more like a $250 phone to me!
    – Set up was easy. I just popped in my AT&T sim and it was totally fine. No fuss.
    – I opened up multiple apps at once to see if it would lag out on me or feel chuggy. So far I have not noticed anything laggy. Seems pretty responsive and smooth.
    – You DO get an App drawer 🙂
    – You get a screen protector
    – You get headphones with a mic 🙂
    – Notification/call sounds are pretty loud
    -Vibration is good
    -Very fast charging!

    – This is the weirdest part and it is very possible this is something just bizarre on my end – but my phone app (the little phone icon) says 37 missed calls (I have never missed 37 calls in my life!!) and will not open. It just keeps saying “Phone has stopped working”. It so weird. The ONLY way I can make a call is by going through my contacts list and calling people from there. It is honestly very strange. So if I cant make a call using the phone app, that is a downside. Its fine if I just use my contacts, but really I shouldn’t have to. The phone app should just work, since thats the point of it 🙂

    – When you are putting in your sim card and removing the back casing, you will need to have some patience. I can tell easily that quickly removing the back housing will cause it to warp and bend – so please be patient taking it off. You do not want a warped backing because water and dust might get into your battery housing. This is a con just because the company could have put a little more effort into the housing being a bit more durable – but thats how it is.

    – The speaker is on the back – so if you’re covering it, itll muffle the sound.

    – Call volume is a bit on the low end

So far – it seems to be reliable and worth the money. I am getting all of my notifications for work and emails reliably which is what I need it for. I would suggest that if you are looking for a phone with a huge display, good build quality, and lots of cool features and do not need it for an extended period of time, this is the phone for you. I would not buy this phone if you are looking to permanently replace your high end Samsungs or Iphones or LG’s. This is a really great secondary phone for your more flagship devices and should be treated as such. I only have put 4/5 stars because of the phone app not working. I will update and review again once I figure out why it keeps crashing and has “37 missed calls” on it.
I will update this review as time goes on 😉

    UPDATE 12/27:

I got the phone app to start working again by rebooting the device. Sometimes it still closes but I can at least make calls through it instead of having to go through contacts.

The phone’s processor is not going to cut it for you if you are needing to multi-task very much. An example of this is having apps like FB Messenger, Instagram and Etsy all open at the same time. Switching between apps that take up a lot of processing power and need to have data refreshed often will cause lags and cause shut downs of the apps (“Instagram has stopped responding” etc). Also opening certain apps like FB Messenger are pretty slow/sluggish. Sometimes I have to wait 30-40 seconds for an app to actually start working. Not a huge deal but can be a bit aggravating.

I used google maps for my road trip over the weekend and it works great, but if you try and search for a new location or new direction – there is…
